Description

Academic Writing Day for research students: With Dr Adair Richards

Who is it for? Research Students post-transfer or at writing up stage.

What will it cover? This course aims both to help you increase your academic writing ability and to provide you with a structured opportunity to write and receive feedback on your writing. The first half will focus on the characteristics of academic writing, improving academic structure and paragraphs, using sources effectively and critical analysis. The second half will provide opportunities for you to do some academic writing relevant to your project and practice some of the techniques discussed.

By the end of the day you will:-

  • Understand the writing process and structure
  • Improve your ability to critically analyse
  • Learn how to better construct an academic paragraph
  • Learn how to use sources effectively
  • Practice techniques to overcome writer’s block
  • Have started putting these into practice in your own writing

IMPORTANT: In the afternoon there will be time dedicated for you to write. Please come ready to do some writing (e.g. Part of your thesis or a paper you’re working on). If it will assist you to bring a laptop, then feel free to do so.

This workshop is open to any student currently registered on a research degree programme at the University of Northampton. Further information is available from Simone Apel (simone.apel@northampton.ac.uk; 01604 893418).
